If you are looking to be bored out of your mind this Halloween season, "The House of the Devil" is for you. The film actually has a pretty cool concept, but it just drags and drags and drags, with almost nothing even happening, and by the time something does, it is absolutely ridiculous, poorly edited, and the ending is anticlimactic and vague.
As the film begins, college student Samantha Hughes is looking at an apartment and needs as much money as she can. She sees an ad posted outside her dorm for a babysitter for that night, which happens to be the same night as a full lunar eclipse. As the night progresses, she realizes that her employers hold a deep, dark secret, blah blah blah. By the time anything is discovered, interest has been lost a long time ago.
I am all for slow build-up, but that's only if there is an essence of creepiness that goes along with it. In this movie, NOTHING happens until the last 15 minutes, and as mentioned above, by that point, it is too late. What DOES happen is absolutely ridiculous to the point where you can't help but laugh.
I will say that I liked how the film is shot like an 80s horror film. It really captures the era with everything from clothing, set pieces, and just overall tone and atmosphere. I suppose that's one good thing I can say about it. There really aren't any other positive things I could say about it.
A lot of horror enthusiasts really like this movie, and I am trying to understand why. Did I miss something? Is it worth a second look?
