All of us have dreams that feel so real, we wake up and have to ponder whether or not what we just saw in our minds actually happened. It's even more uncomfortable when you've had a nightmare that really freaked you out.
With "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the late, great Wes Craven made the sleeping process quite difficult. Loosely inspired by real events, he made nightmares real by having teenagers killed while they were slumbering. Imagine fearing the process of sleep and forcing yourself to stay up simply because you wanted to live.
Robert Englund helped to masterfully create the infamous Freddy Krueger, a killer that not only managed to be frightening, but humorous as well. Still, Krueger managed to easily be the most terrifying horror villain from my youth. I used to worry that Freddy Krueger lived in my basement. Any time I went down there, I quickly did what I had to, then rushed up the stairs, terrified that Freddy Krueger was going to get me before I made it to the top.
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" is a horror classic not to be missed this Halloween season. It takes the simple, everyday process of sleeping and makes it into something to dread. Sweet dreams!
